When you enter a poker game, you’ll probably have to pay an entry fee, usually $20. Then, you’ll get one card face up in your hand. This is your hand and you’ll be dealing with it throughout the game. If you’re not happy with it, you can fold. Alternatively, you can bet. If you win, you win the entire pot. You can also bluff, meaning you’re betting that you have the best hand.
The best possible hand is a three-of-a-kind, also known as a trip, or a seven. If you’re holding two aces, you’re looking at a five-of-a-kind. You can also achieve a straight by hitting a pair of aces or a pair of kings, or by obtaining a pair of jacks or a pair of queens. In certain poker games, the ace is treated as the lowest card. For example, in a draw game, you can make a straight with a pair of aces and a pair of jacks.
Before the cards are dealt, you’ll have to choose a chip size. The amount of chips you use will determine how much you bet and raise. The ante is a small bet that each player must make before the hand is dealt. If you bet $10, the pot will have a value of $110. If you bet $99, the pot will have a value of $1010. You can also bet if you’re the first bettor. If you bet a higher amount than the previous bettor, you’re said to raise.
The second betting interval begins with the player to the immediate left of the big blind.
